Remote cooling systems with mesh-based heat exchangers for cryogenic applications

Abstract: In the refrigeration technologies available for the 2 W - 5 W cooling power range at 4.5 K, innovative designs for intermediate cooling options are proposed between the large-scale cryogenic plants and small-scale commercially available cryocoolers. This paper presents a number of remote cooling solutions, which use high-effectiveness mesh-based counterflow heat exchangers (CFHEX) to support the aforementioned refrigeration domain. Additionally, the cooling power is aimed to be provided in a remote, distribute… Show more

“…The CERN Cryolab is doing extensive research on effective mesh-based counter-flow heat exchangers, which we plan to use in the present cryostat in view of their encouraging performance. [46][47][48] The RF equipment at low temperature is placed into an instrumentation vacuum chamber and cooled by thermal contacts to a copper plate onto which the cooling pipe is brazed in a meander. This additional instrumentation vacuum chamber (IVC) acts as a second vacuum environment and facilitates the maintenance of the RF equipment to which the data acquisition system (DAQ) and vector network analyzer (VNA) are connected.…”

“…This is undoubtedly beneficial and becomes extremely relevant for applications where a large mass needs to be cooled, e.g. cooling of superconducting magnets and radio-frequency cavities in future large-scale installations, such as the Future Circular Collider [10,23]. Even if the cooling source in these installations is different, e.g.…”

“…The performance of the system at the two chosen operating points is summarised in Tab. 8.1 [103]. "Point 1" serves to demonstrate the system performance at the nominal CIF temperature, and "Point 2" demonstrates the lowest temperature that could be achieved under the stated circulation constraints.…”
