Remote delivery of psychological interventions for Parkinson's disease

Abstract: Although a preliminary work indicates efficacy, future studies should demonstrate the non-inferiority of these telehealth programs compared to face-to-face delivery, and examine the long-term outcomes of remotely delivered therapy. Video-conferencing (VC) appears to be a promising modality to overcome noted limitations of telephone delivery, and has demonstrated efficacy for PD speech programs. Further research should be conducted evaluating telehealth VC modalities for delivery of psychotherapy including CBT,… Show more

“…The current study also extends recent research exploring the delivery of ACT using phone and web-based conferencing technology. ACT protocols have been administered in this form for various groups including people with Parkinson's [24], public speaking anxiety [25], and those engaged in smoking cessation work [26]. The results of the current study further support the suitability of the ACT approach to be delivered in a remote and manualised form.…”

A small pilot study evaluated internet-administered cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for the treatment of depression and anxiety in nine PD patients and found a significant reduction in their depressive symptoms [15].…”

“…Beneficiary results are usually visible and maintained at the follow‐up clinical assessment. As with depression, some research suggests that CBT anxiety treatment in Parkinson's disease patients can be provided not just individual or in person, but also in remote delivery modus or in a group setting (Feeney, Egan, & Gasson, 2011; Swalwell, Pachana, & Dissanayaka, 2018). Recommendations for anxiety treatments are visible in Table 2.…”
