Remote follow-up using patient-reported outcome measures in patients with chronic kidney disease: the PROKID study – study protocol for a non-inferiority pragmatic randomised controlled trial

Abstract: Background Outpatient care is steadily changing from hospital consultations to other platforms, such as phone consultation and online virtual clinics. It is prudent to maintain quality of care with such initiatives. Currently, patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have frequent scheduled visits, but it may be possible to optimise the frequency of hospital consultations using information from patient-reported outcome (PRO) questionnaires filled in at home (PRO-based follow-up). This approach m… Show more

“… 34 The availability of new technologies has increased the role of virtual clinical trials and the use of mobile clinical trial platforms assessing PROs in conjunction with wearable devices to track participants with no in-person site visits required. 34 Virtual studies have the potential to make clinical studies more inclusive, faster and more cost-effective. 34 This can be achieved using technology, such as smartphones, that study participants may already have available.…”

“…29 While such an essence may be true for some specialties more than others, each specialty needs to work this out individually based on cost, physical space capacity, need for lengthy history or PE, availability of diagnostic aids, and the role for specialty-specific procedures. Randomized controlled trials by specialty may help assess clinical quality measures, health resource utilization, and patient-reported outcomes, 30 and can also inform statistical reasoning. Telephone consultation vs videoconferencing can be compared.…”
