Remote sensing of volcanic CO2, HF, HCl, SO2, and BrO in the downwind plume of Mt. Etna

Abstract: Abstract. Remote sensing of the gaseous composition of non-eruptive, passively degassing volcanic plumes can be a tool to gain insight into volcano interior processes. Here, we report on a field study in September 2015 that demonstrates the feasibility of remotely measuring the volcanic enhancements of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), hydrogen fluoride (HF), hydrogen chloride (HCl), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), and bromine monoxide (BrO) in the downwind plume of Mt. Etna using portable and rugged spectroscopic instrumentati… Show more

“…For CH 4 the situation is similarly pressing due to a higher anthropogenic share [9]. Coalmine and stable ventilation installations, and leaks in oil and gas production infrastructure constitute major CH 4 point sources [10].…”

“…Emissions from strong point sources increase the ambient CO 2 or CH 4 abundance by an amount significantly larger than the variability from surrounding natural sources and sinks. Despite their importance, point sources are sparsely sampled by the ground-based network which calls for more measurements, whereby satellite remote sensors offer global cover.…”
