Removal of deltamethrin insecticide over highly porous activated carbon prepared from pistachio nutshells

Abstract: Potassium hydroxide-activated carbons (CK21, CK11, and CK12) were prepared from pistachio nutshells. Physicochemical properties of activated carbons were characterized by TGA, pH pzc , Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and N 2 -adsorption at -196°C. The examinations showed that activated carbons have high surface area ranging between 695-1218 m 2 /g, total pore volume ranging between 0.527-0.772 mL/g, and a pore radius around 1.4 nm. The presence of acidic and basic surface… Show more

“…When comparing the maximum adsorption capacity determined for the developed material with literature data, it can be observed superior qm values for deltamethrin. Hassan et al [13] obtained a maximum value of 162.6 mg/g for the adsorption of deltamethrin on potassium hydroxide activated carbons prepared from pistachio nutshells (at 35°C), Al-Qodah et al [14] obtained a value of 10.96 mg/g (at 25°C) for the adsorption on oil shale ash, while Ghafari et al [15] registered values up to 41.7 mg/g for the adsorption on modified magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. Regarding the adsorption of thiamethoxam, the experimental results also shows superior results, by comparison with literature data: Liu et al [16] obtained an adsorption capacity of approx.…”

“…We take 0.15 g from the sample and added them to each flask, the flasks were agitated for 48 h, and the final pH was then measured. The pHpzc is the point where pH final -pH initial = zero [12].…”

“…The idea of using various agricultural products and by-products for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions has been investigated by several researchers (Bouchelta et al, 2008 ;Chowdhury et al, 2012 ;Billy et al, 2013 ;Ahmedna et al, 2000;Hassan et al, 2013). The efficiency of different organic waste materials as sorbents for heavy metals has been proven, with the obvious advantage of their lower cost compared to other materials (Carrott et al, 2007;Wu et al, 2008;Giwa et al, 2013).…”
