“…There are several methods to decrease DOM concentrations such as flocculation/coagulation (Sillanpää et al, 2018), oxidation (Kainulainen et al, 1994;Wenk et al, 2013), membrane (Schäfer et al, 2001;Zhang et al, 2018;Zularisam et al, 2006), and sorption to solid surfaces (Fettig, 1999;Heijman et al, 1999). Activated carbon (AC) is the most excessively employed sorbent in water treatment plants all over the world based on its high surface area and affinity towards a wide range of organic pollutants (Dąbrowski et al, 2005;Gur-Reznik et al, 2008;Moreno-Castilla, 2004;Namasivayam and Kavitha, 2002).…”

“…When compared to PAC, ferrihydrite (FH) as a pre-treatment adsorbent was found to be more effective in removing high and low to medium molecular weight HA and SA molecules via ligand exchange between the phenolic and the carboxylic groups of NOM and the hydroxyl groups of FH, thus reducing membrane fouling in a hybrid adsorption-UF membrane system [210,213,214,275,276]. Zhang et al [277] found that the adsorption capacity of FH followed the order of HAąBSAąSA, while PAC followed the order of BSAąHAąSA. When combined with UF, nanoscale carbon black was also found to remove NOM better than PAC [16].…”

“…The deposition of organic matters on the membrane surface caused the gradual increase in TMP for all runs during 2500 h experiment. Zhang et al 28 suggested that this phenomenon is caused by biopolymer deposition and biofilm formation. The continuous increase in TMP occurred in all runs at fluxes of 15 and 10 L/m 2 /h; this condition can also be attributed to the microbial activity on the membrane surface.…”
