Removal of Hazardous Oxyanions from the Environment Using Metal-Oxide-Based Materials

Abstract: Scientific development has increased the awareness of water pollutant forms and has reawakened the need for its effective purification. Oxyanions are created by a variety of redox-sensitive metals and metalloids. These species are harmful to living matter due to their toxicity, nondegradibility, and mobility in aquatic environments. Among a variety of water treatment techniques, adsorption is one of the simplest, cheapest, and most effective. Since metal-oxide-based adsorbents poses a variety of functional gro… Show more

“…It has been identified and classified by USEPA that activated alumina is one of the best available technologies for As removal in drinking water (Weidner and Ciesielczyk, 2019) due to its relatively high surface area. Moreover, activated alumina has a selectivity towards As(III) and As(V) (Clifford, 1999;Weidner and Ciesielczyk, 2019). One of the key advantages of this novel adsorbent is its mechanical and chemical stability in aqueous environments.…”

“…Notable among these forms of environmental pollution is the type caused by the release of poisonous heavy metals. 1 The interaction of the released heavy metals ions in the environment and their toxic levels is a function of their various redox potentials and aqueous speciation. Metal ions constitute a major category of water contaminants and these toxic ions enter the environment from various industrial processes such as paint, mining, cement industries, and many more.…”

“…Ferric hydroxide-based adsorbents can be used very efficiently to remove hazardous oxo-anions from contaminated groundwater ( Weidner and Ciesielczyk, 2019 ). Such materials are often used as filler in fixed-bed adsorbent (FBA) columns for water purification facilities ( Deliyanni et al., 2003 , 2009 ; Daus et al., 2004 ; Badruzzaman et al., 2004 ; Saha et al., 2005 ; Sperlich et al., 2005 , 2008 ; Naeem et al., 2007 ; Banerjee et al., 2008 ; Streat et al., 2008 ; Guan et al., 2008 ; Kolbe et al., 2011 ; Hilbrandt et al., 2019 ).…”
