Removal of indigo carmine from an aqueous solution by fungus Pleurotus ostreatus

Abstract: Abstract:The role of fungi in the treatment of wastewater has been extensively researched. Many genera of fungi have been employed for the dye decolourization either in living or dead form. In this study, the removal of an acidic dye, Indigo Carmine (IC), from an aqueous solution by biosorption on dead fungus, Pleurotus ostreatus, was investigated. The effects of contact time, initial dye concentration, amount of dead biomass, agitation rate and initial pH on dye removal have been determined. Experimental resu… Show more

“…The mycelia of P. ostreatus were incubated at 30 ºC on slant Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) for 7 days. Then the mycelial suspensions were utilized for inoculum [17]. The fungus was precultured in 250 mL flasks containing 100 mL Sabouraud Dextrose Broth (SDB) at 150 rpm for 5 days and then homogenized at low speed under aseptic conditions.…”

“…However, in this study the death of raw materials for dye degradation capacity remained at 4.0-8.0, illustrating that dried biomass enzyme activity cannot be ignored. On the other hand, such action by a weak electrostatic attraction effect shows that mutual interaction strength cannot be neglected [16][17].…”

“…Numerous adsorbents have been used for reactive dyes elimination from wastewater, such as activated carbon, natural/synthetic clay, fl y ash, polymeric adsorbents, etc. (Ciobanu et al 2008, Harja et al 2011, Kahraman et al 2012, Kaušpėdienė et al 2013. Currently, there is a growing interest in using low-cost, eco--friendly and non-conventional materials as an alternative to traditional adsorbents (Gupta et al 2009).…”
