Removal of Some Chemical Pollutants from Aqueous Solutions by using of Porous Polymers manufactured with Rice Straw

Abstract

The goal of this article is to through light on ways and means of the beneficial utilization of rice straw. New technologies and solutions for contribution to the environmental protection, minimizing health hazards as well as the economic return on agriculture and industry in Egypt. So we were used rice straw (RS) with polyurethane (PU) foams, to fabricate a porous polymer sorbent material, to remove chemical pollutant from solutions. These fabricated polymers have function groups and pores that are responsible for the absorption process for chemical pollutants from aqueous solutions. The absorption capacity of synthesised sorbent polymers for petroleum oil (crude oil) and heavy metal ions (Cd 2+ , Cu 2+) were calculated. The optimum conditions at which the high efficiency for the absorption process proceeded was investigated such as percentage of components for synthesis of polyurethane and rice straw fabrication, effect of time. Moreover SEM shows the pores of the synthesized polymer. The experimental result showed that PU with the 160:50ratio of toluene di-isocyanate (component-1) and glycerol (component-2) showed the highest absorption capacity, equal to 3.639 g/g. Thus, the new fabricated sorbent polymer optimum conditions by addition for synthesized polyurethane 30% of rice straw mass and 500 μm of size was highest, the optimum time for absorption capacity was after 120 minutes and the metal ion absorption capacity for Cd 2+ , Cu 2+ was 220.9 mg/g and 200.6 mg/g respectively.
