Renal Anomalies in Turner's Syndrome

Abstract: Of 15 patients with Turner's syndrome studied for renal anomalies by intravenous pyelogram, 11 had demonstrable abnormalities ; three had horseshoe kidney. None had evidence of impaired renal func tion. Four reported previous urinary tract infections. Similarities among the positional and structural abnormalities of the kidneys suggested a continuum of morphologic changes, with a possible re lationship of such changes to impaired positional information pro gramming by the developing abnormal gonad during embry… Show more

“…In more-recent series, the prevalence varies from 33% to 60% [5,9,12,16]. In the study of Lippe et al [9], 141 patients with TS were evaluated by IVP, and 39% of patients had different renal anomalies.…”

“…Hypertension may also develop due to vascular abnormalities, such as coarctation of the aorta and/or intrarenal vascular changes [3,4,5]. The reported incidence of renal malformations varies between 33% and 66% in all groups of TS patients [4,5,9,10,11,12]. In TS patients with nonmosaic 45,X karyotype, major anomalies of the cardiovascular and genitourinary systems are observed more frequently.…”

“…Later investigators have corroborated a greater than 60% prevalence of urinary anomalies in the syndrome. 3 The predominant malformations in these patients are horseshoe kidneys, and upper urinary tract malrotations and duplications. Isolated cases of unilateral renal agenesis or unilateral hypoplasia have been reported.…”

“…Most of the renal anomalies in Turner's syndrome, however, do not affect overall renal function and have only been discovered on routine intravenous pyelograms in these patients. 3 We describe a case of Turner mosaicism in which a previously unassociated urinary anomaly resulted in severe neonatal renal insufficiency.…”

“…The most-common clinical characteristics are listed in Table 1. Association of renal abnormalities and Turner syndrome varies from 33% to 70% [4,5], with a greater prevalence in subjects with a mosaic karyotype than in 45X0 patients [6] (Table 2).…”
