Renal biopsy findings among Indigenous Australians: a nationwide review

Abstract: Australia's Indigenous people have high rates of chronic kidney disease and kidney failure. To define renal disease among these people, we reviewed 643 renal biopsies on Indigenous people across Australia, and compared them with 249 biopsies of non-Indigenous patients. The intent was to reach a consensus on pathological findings and terminology, quantify glomerular size, and establish and compare regional biopsy profiles. The relative population-adjusted biopsy frequencies were 16.9, 6.6, and 1, respectively, … Show more

“…A low nephron endowment is associated with larger glomeruli, low birth weight (23,24), and increased risk of kidney failure (25,26). Prior studies suggest a high rate of CKD linked to low nephron endowment and glomerulomegaly, particularly in certain racial or ethnic groups (27)(28)(29)(30). The association of a family history of ESRD with morphometric measures of nephron hypertrophy in this study may represent a familial pattern of low nephron endowment, but we could not confirm this.…”

“…The high prevalence of albuminuria in this population has been linked to low nephron number related to low birth weight [27,28]. Morphometric studies of kidney biopsies in the Aboriginal population of Australia show glomerulomegaly, perhaps secondary to nephron deficiency, which might predispose to glomerulosclerosis [29,30]. A correlation between LBW and CKD has also been described in poor African Americans and Caucasians living in the Southeastern USA [31].…”
