Renal Cell Carcinoma in a Renal Cyst: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Abstract: We report a case of renal cell carcinoma within a simple renal cyst in the lower pole of the right kidney. Excretory urography showed a mass and ultrasonography revealed multiple renal cysts with a solid component arising from the wall in 1. This finding also was visualized by computerized tomography. Analysis of the cystic fluid showed a high cholesterol level but negative cytological results. At operation a 7 mm. tumor arose from the wall of the cyst. Histopathological examination showed grade 3 renal cell c… Show more

“…Since these early theories, it is apparent that there are several permutations on the renal cysts and RCC theme that merit separation (33)(34)(35)(36)(37)(38)(39)(40). These are noted in Table 3 with comments on their significance.…”

“…The obesity-related pathways affecting kidney oncogenesis may also be biologically linked with processes affecting cyst formation [7,14]. A novel finding in our study was that all obese (BMI ≥30) papillary RCC patients (n = 109) had SRCs, which strongly indicates that obesity may predispose to renal cyst formation and possibly papillary RCC by unknown mechanisms.…”

“…On the contrary, some benign as well as malignant renal neoplasms are inherently cystic, like the cystic nephroma and the multilocular cystic renal cell carcinoma. In addition, a mural nodule of RCC is sometimes detected to appear in a SRC during follow-up [7,8]. …”

“…El CR puede presentarse sobre riñones con quistes renales simples (Fig. 3) en sus diversas formas de manifestación (hiliosinuquistosis y quistes corticales), sin que ello represente una asociación entre ambas entidades 54 . En un trabajo sobre "tumores quísticos renales" el 6% correspondió a CR implantados en la pared de un quiste simple, lo que señala una coincidencia de ambos procesos y el empleo confuso de la terminología 9 .…”
