Renal cell carcinomas in haemodialysis patients: does haemodialysis duration influence pathological cell types and prognosis?

Abstract: HD duration influenced pathological cell types and tumour stages of RCCs in HD patients. Patients receiving > 10 years of HD experienced RCCs with a sarcomatoid component, which resulted in poor outcomes. Hence, patients receiving long-term HD, and especially those with > 10 years of HD, should have frequent and careful medical examinations.

“…20,21 In some recent publications, a long duration of dialysis (>10 y) has had a stronger association with ACD-RCC compared with other subtypes of RCC arising in this setting, [22][23][24] although such an association was not identified in another large series. 5,[20][21][22]24,25 Most tumor cells have abundant granular eosinophilic cytoplasm, with round to oval nuclei showing vesicular chromatin and prominent nucleoli. The noncystic tumors are well circumscribed and may be surrounded by a thick fibrous capsule showing dystrophic calcification.…”

“…20 The tumors often appear as nodules arising from cyst walls, occasionally completely filling these cysts, or as solid masses separate from the cysts. One characteristic feature is the presence of intracellular and/or intercellular microscopic lumina (holes), imparting a cribriform/sieve-like appearance 5,20,22,24,25 (Fig. Cut surfaces are tan to yellow, and hemorrhage and necrotic/friable areas are commonplace.…”

“…[83][84][85][86][87] Duration of dialysis has been associated with ACKD, which is an important risk factor for RCC. [88][89][90][91][92] RCC might also develop in the native kidneys of renal transplant recipients, even in those who have good graft function. 93 than sporadic RCCs.…”

“…The choice of RRT or dialysis duration might modify the risk of cancer [9], [10]. Patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) longer than ten years have greatly increased risk of developing RCC with a sarcomatoid component than those with shorter than ten years [11]. Moreover, the different histologic spectrum of RCC occurs according to the duration of dialysis [12].…”
