Abstract:Although chronic renal disease is uncommon in horses, guidelines for management of the broodmare with kidney disease are needed to ensure successful foaling. Herein, we present a case report of a broodmare with chronic renal disease that produced a live foal, and parturition was predicted by monitoring pH and electrolytes in the milk. A 15year-old pregnant mare presented with a history of poor body condition and weight loss despite an excellent appetite. At presentation, the mare was bright, alert and responsi… Show more
“…Further, as in the report by de Aguiar et al . (2022), treatment with altrenogest to improve cervical tone and pentoxifylline to enhance placental perfusion can be considered. Although these medications appear to improve pregnancy outcomes in mares with placentitis (Bailey et al .…”

“…In summary, the case described by de Aguiar et al . (2022) in this issue of EVE demonstrates that mares with CKD can maintain pregnancy and successfully deliver a foal, although such pregnancies should be considered high‐risk and neonates may need to be referred to an intensive care facility if they are not thriving within the initial hours after birth. Successful pregnancy and parturition have also been the author’s experience with two mares with CKD detected earlier in gestation.…”

“…In this issue of EVE, de Aguiar et al . (2022) describe the successful parturition and survival of a filly from a 15‐year‐old Quarter Horse mare with chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD was initially recognised when azotaemia was detected on a serum biochemical profile collected at 318 days of gestation, as part of the diagnostic evaluation of weight loss.…”
