Renal Metastasis Originating From Liver Cancer

Abstract: The patient was a 52-year-old man. He was suspected of having right renal carcinoma with hepatic metastasis and was referred to our hospital. The result of percutaneous needle biopsy on the right renal tumor showed a renal cell carcinoma. For the treatment, he underwent transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) and intramuscular injection of interferon alpha. However, he was getting weaker and weaker and two months later he died due to hepatic failure. The result of autopsy showed that the renal carcinoma was … Show more

“…HCC is well known to metastasize to the kidneys, although HCC metastatic to the kidneys is a rather rare event. In most cases reported so far, the primary liver tumor and renal metastasis were synchronous (Hsu et al 1994;Fukushima et al 1996;Mezawa et al 2001;Sanz Mayayo et al 2003;D'Antonio et al 2010). In case of metastatic clear cell HCC, distinction from renal cell carcinoma of the clear cell (hypernephroid) type may be difficult, and metastatic HCC may mimic renal oncocytoma, but metastatic HCC lacks the typical nesting pattern of oncocytoma (D'Antonio et al 2010).…”

“…64,65 Renal involvement by hepatocellular carcinoma is also rare with <15 cases reported before 2012 in clinical series. [66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73] Cases of cholangiocarcinoma metastasizing to the kidney have also been reported. 74,75 In addition, a rare case of hepatic epithelioid angiomyolipoma with secondary renal involvement has also been reported in the literature.…”

“…Pancreatic tumors rarely metastasize to the kidney with an incidence of 2.7%6; the route is usually hematogenous but direct invasion to the adjacent left kidney may also occur 64,65. Renal involvement by hepatocellular carcinoma is also rare with <15 cases reported before 2012 in clinical series 66–73. Cases of cholangiocarcinoma metastasizing to the kidney have also been reported 74,75.…”
