Renal Oncocytoma of the Native Kidney after Renal Transplantation

Abstract: Patients with acquired cystic kidney disease (ACKD) are at an increased risk of renal neoplasms. Frequent tumors are adenomas and renal cell carcinomas. However, renal oncocytomas may occur in patients with ACKD. Little is known about oncocytomas of the native kidney following renal transplantation. By means of B scan ultrasonography, a solid and echo-inhomogeneous renal mass was incidentically observed in the right native kidney of a 28-year-old female patient with ACKD 4 years following renal transplantation… Show more

“…To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of a renal oncocytoma in an asymptomatic renal transplant patient with microscopic hematuria in which a hypervascular mass with heterogeneous enhancement and pseudocapsule was shown by using CEUS, suggesting malignancy. Furthermore, only four cases of renal transplant recipients with oncocytomas in native kidneys have been reported in the literature 15…”

“…Microscopically, ROs are characterized by round or polygonal cells that are eosinophilic epithelial cells called oncocytes with a mitochondria-rich cytoplasm arranged in trabecular or tubular patterns [2,4,10]. Histological differential diagnosis from a chromophobe RCC is very important and can be challenging.…”

“…Riehl et al . [10] discuss a young renal-graft recipient who developed a solitary RO in a native kidney with ACKD, 4 years after RT. In this case report, we present a unique case of renal oncocytomatosis of the native kidneys in a renal transplant recipient with normal graft function, 6 years following RT.…”
