“…There is ultrastructural evidence that the oncocytic cells of the kidney come from the proximal convoluted tubules [12] (although some authors [13] wonder whether it originates in the thick portion of Henle's loop). Unquestionably oncocytic areas have been recognized in granular cell carcinomas [14,15], The existence of renal tumors with overlapping oncocytoma characteristics and granular cell carcinomas [2] (there fore aspirative cytology or intraoperatory biopsy cannot be considered as absolutely reliable methods [2,3]) has been reported, as have renal oncocytoma with métas tasés [7], If all these findings are considered together, it is easy to observe that there are no big differences between the oncocytoma and well-differentiated clear-cell carcino mas. To support the finding that renal oncocytoma is a true clinico-pathological entity, some authors [16,17] have studied it on the basis of the benignity of the evo lution [1,5,7] and the angiographic peculiarities.…”
