Renal registry in Hong Kong—the first 20 years

Abstract: Renal Registry was started by the Hospital Authority (HA) in Hong Kong in 1995. It is an online system developed by HA. It collects all patients under care in HA, which is about 90–95 % of all requiring renal replacement therapy (RRT) in Hong Kong. The total number of patients treated increased from 3312 in 1996 to 8510 in 2013. In 2013, there were 3501 renal transplant, 1192 hemodialysis (HD) and 3817 peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. “…According to the Hong Kong Renal Registry, the PD peritonitis rate has improved from 1 per 25 patient months in 2001 to 1 per 35 patient months in 2011 [5]. A similar phenomenon was also observed in Australia and New Zealand with the PD peritonitis rate improving from 0.63 episodes per patient year in 2003 and 2004 to 0.43 episodes per patient year in 2011 [17].…”

“…On the basis of cost-effectiveness, the Committee promoted PD as the first-line dialysis modality for all patients with chronic kidney disease who require dialysis therapy, and this also marked the beginning of the PD-first policy. Under this policy, all patients requiring dialysis therapy are treated with PD first unless medical contraindications exist [3,4,5]. All patients with chronic kidney disease who require dialysis will be introduced to both PD and HD during pre-dialysis education, but the Hong Kong Hospital Authority will only reimburse patients for HD if they have medical contraindications for PD.…”

“…After all, Asia is diversified with different ethnic groups, cultures and medical practices. This highlights the importance of establishing a comprehensive renal registry, not only to compare the patterns of diseases and outcomes of renal patients with those in other countries, but also because the data collected over time are crucial to medical policy planning and resources allocation by each government [52]. There is a general lack of renal registries in Asian countries which makes an accurate estimation of the number of individuals needing RRT impossible [53].…”
