Renal Stone Disease: The Urological Perspective

Abstract: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy, extracorporeal lithotripsy and ureteroscopy have changed the face of urolithiasis. Open surgery is becoming extremely rare today. Nevertheless, the cooperation between nephrologist and urologist remains essential and is the only way to prevent recurrence.

“…Compared with other methods such as open surgery, it is cheaper and has lower morbidity and better postoperative patient comfort and thus has almost replaced open intervention for the management of renal calculi. 1,2 Before PCNL, shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) and open nephrolithotomy were the primary treatment modalities for patients with these stones. Many patients who previously underwent open nephrolithotomy or SWL, however, now present with a recurrent stone in the same kidney and need PCNL.…”

“…Since then, further advances in the technique and equipment have allowed urologists to perform percutaneous stone removal with an increasing success rate and reduced morbidity [7]. Compared with other methods, such as open surgery, it is cheaper and has lower morbidity and better postoperative patient comfort [8], and it thus has almost replaced open intervention for treating renal calculi [9]. However, open surgery is still performed in Turkey, with the exception of certain hospitals.…”

“…2,3 Compared with other methods such as open surgery, it is cheaper and has lower morbidity and better postoperative patient comfort 4 and thus has almost replaced open intervention for the treatment of renal calculi. 5 Stone recurrence is seen mostly in patients who have previously been treated. The probability that a second stone will form within 5 to 7 years is approximately 50%; 6 hence, more renal stone patients treated previously with open nephrolithotomy are now presenting.…”
