Depletion of fossil fuel and massive emissions of hazardous greenhouse gases are prompting many researchers to focus on greener renewable fuel such as biodiesel, which has the potential to replace petrodiesel partially. This review covers various aspects related to biodiesel feedstock and its effects on biodiesel characteristics, biodiesel production methods, blending techniques, biodiesel properties, combustion, engine performance, and emission analysis, the effects of different additives on biodiesel characteristics, and some challenges associated with biodiesel. Moreover, different relevant empirical correlations of biodiesel properties and combustion parameters are presented. Despite alkali catalysis being the most adopted transesterification process, lipase catalysis and heterogeneous catalysis are potential processes for future biodiesel production from low‐cost feedstock. Biodiesel has higher viscosity, density, flash point, cetane number, and pour point while having low heating value in comparison with petrodiesel. Most studies conducted on diesel engine led to a reduction in brake power, brake thermal efficiency, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, and unburned hydrocarbons, and increased brake specific fuel consumption and oxides of nitrogen are associated with biodiesel compared to petrodiesel. In brief, biodiesel is comparable to petrodiesel. However, before there is a large‐scale application of biodiesel in the automotive sector it has to overcome some challenges such as its compatibility with engine components, its instability, its effect on engine wear, deposit formation, and clogging of fuel filters and injectors. Increased focus should also be given to second‐generation biodiesel over first‐generation biodiesel because second‐generation biodiesel can offset production costs, reduce deforestation, and solve the food versus fuel problem. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The depletion of fossil fuels and their market inequality have led to the popularity of biofuels. Biofuels are a renewable energy source which can be a promising solution to the environmental issues created by fossil fuels. The emission of greenhouse gases and fluctuating prices of fossil fuels have put pressure on developing countries and small economic nations. Thus, one of the main concerns is the production of bio jet fuel from renewable resources, with a relatively low greenhouse gas life cycle and sustainability with affordable prices. Therefore, it is imperative to introduce and produce alternative aviation fuels generated from sustainable resources, specifically biofuels. In this study, we have reviewed alternative aviation fuels and their sources. We have also outlined the selection criteria for alternative aviation fuels along with discussing the sources that can be potentially used as fuel for the aviation industry.

O cenário energético mundial caminha para busca por matrizes de energias renováveis. O biodiesel surge como um biocombustível renovável, de combustão mais limpa, gradualmente incorporado ao diesel convencional visando limitar o consumo de combustíveis fósseis e diminuir as emissões de poluentes e gases de efeito estufa. Nessa perspectiva, a partir da implementação do Programa Nacional de Produção e Uso de Biodiesel em meados de 2005, a produção de biodiesel no Brasil torna-se realidade. Diversas usinas de produção em larga escala foram construídas tendo no Norte de Minas Gerais a implementação da Usina Darcy Ribeiro, da Petrobrás Biocombustíveis. O objetivo desse artigo é analisar a produção de biodiesel no cenário brasileiro tendo um olhar especial para a produção deste combustível na região de Montes Claros e a implicação nas atividades da agricultura familiar regional. O trabalho foi realizado através da coletânea de informações bibliográficas referenciadas sobre as questões do biodiesel, do modelo de gestão da usina de biodiesel Darcy Ribeiro e sua atuação no Norte de Minas Gerais. A Usina utiliza diversos materiais na produção do biodiesel, mas o principal é o óleo de soja. A mamona, principal cultura dos agricultores familiares visando o fornecimento para a usina não apresentou boa rentabilidade e produtividade devido à falta de estudo do zoneamento agrícola, tendo sua área de campo reduzida drasticamente. A proposta governamental era criar um programa dirigido para agricultura familiar, sobretudo, a região Norte de Minas, para geração de renda no campo, redução da pobreza e desenvolvimento rural regional mas verificou-se o predomínio do agribusiness.
