Renin, Aldosterone, and Serum-Converting Enzyme Activity during Normal and Hypertensive Pregnancy

Abstract: Plasma renin activity, plasma aldosterone, and serum-converting enzyme activity were measured in 13 normotensive pregnant women in three sequential periods: 19–21 29–31, and 38–40 weeks of gestation. The converting enzyme activity was also measured in a group of 6 women with hypertensive pregnancy and an age-matched control group of 35 normal nonpregnant women. Plasma renin activity and plasma aldosterone values were both significantly elevated in the three periods of pregnancy, but plasma aldosterone levels w… Show more

“…There are conflicting results on the relationship of ACE activities with pregnancy-induced hypertension or preeclampsia and chronic hypertension superimposed on pregnancy-induced hypertension (19, 20). Plasma ACE level has been associated with the insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism in intron 16 of the ACE gene (15).…”

“…One novelty of this study attains to the fact that the circadian rhythm for serum ACE activity has now received a documentation for physiologic pregnancy, even though the parameters of its oscillation appear to be peculiar because of a reduction It must be repeated that nonchronobiological studies demonstrated the morning levels of serum ACE activity to be decreased less than expected in pregnancy complicated by pre-eclampsa [16,17]. To this back ground, the present study adds the notion that serum ACE activity in pre-eclampsia syndrome has no rhythmic excursion and remains inappropriately elevated during the 24 h.…”

“…Blood sampling in gravidas was performed at the third tri mester of gestation (week [34][35][36][37][38], knowing that serum ACE activity exhibits poor changes during the first and second gestational trimester [15][16][17]. Pregnant women investigated were both primigravid and mul tigravid, considering that parity is not a deterministic factor for the activity of serum ACE [16].…”

“…The recognition that the level of aldosterone fluctuates considcrably hclps to explain thc very wide ranges of plasma aldosterone concentrations that have been reported (Ledoux et al 1975;Dux et al 1984;Fcw et al 1986a) and the poor correlation with plasma renin activity and angiotensin-11 Concentration (Weir et al 1975). The diurnal pattern of saliva aldosterone in pregnancy shows the same variability that we have found in non-pregnant subjects (Few et al 1987) but in pregnancy thc peaks of saliva aldostcronc arc 5-10 times higher.…”
