Renin inhibition and microalbuminuria development: meaningful predictor of kidney disease progression

Abstract: DRIs are the latest addition to the class of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors available for patients with hypertension and kidney disease. Whether these drugs can improve upon the reduction of cardiovascular and renal risk with an ACEi or an ARB is unknown. Microalbuminuria is a surrogate marker for both cardiovascular and possibly renal endpoints. However, an ongoing issue is that the majority of patients with microalbuminuria will die of cardiovascular events before the onset of end-sta… Show more

“…Finally, about 90% of the study population used an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker at inclusion, which are known to be effective in attenuating albuminuria. 35 This may have masked a possible effect of BAT on the progression of proteinuria.…”

“…Microalbuminuria (MAU) was identified as an early indicator of kidney disease using the 24 h microalbuminuria method 22 , 23 . Urine samples were collected within 24 h and submitted for analysis 22 , 23 . Microalbuminuria was determined by pyrogallol red molybdate complex method, with the normal reference value of 24 h microalbuminuria being 0–150 mg 22 , 23 .…”
