Renormalization of string functionals

Abstract: We investigate analytic renormalization procedures for functional integrals, corresponding to field theories defined on compact manifolds, which arise, e.g., from string functionals of the Nambu-Schild-Eguchi type. Although these models belong to the nonrenormalizable class of quantum field theories, we prove finiteness for a rectangular string shape up to three-loop level, for circular boundary up to two-loop order, and for a variety of graphs in higher order, thus indicating that the result might hold in gen… Show more

“…(2.17), and the estimate F 1st in which also the first excited states, k + k = 1, are kept into account. Finally, as a comparison, in the last two columns we report the one loop and two loop perturbative approximations to the whole NG action discussed, for instance, in [9,10].…”

“…The standard procedure to treat the effective Nambu-Goto string [9] in the last twenty years was to fix the so called "physical gauge" and expand perturbatively the partition function around the classical solution (the surface of minimal area) in terms of the inverse product of the string tension σ with the area of the surface.…”

“…The free string described in the previous section is the infrared limit of a large class of models having in common the bosonic character of the field describing the fluctuations of the color flux tube (see [3]). Among these various models, the Nambu-Goto string is the best candidate to describe the short distance corrections to the free string picture that, as discussed above, must be present in the effective description of confinement.…”

“…For Polyakov loop correlators, the NambuGoto string predicts a correction to the free string behavior that has been computed in [3] using ζ-function regularization at two-loop level, (the loop expansion parameter being 1/(σ 0 LR)) and is given, in three dimensions, by:…”

“…The theoretical background of the effective string in this setting is well-known: the pioneering works by Lüscher, Münster, Symanzik and Weisz [1][2][3] date back to the Eighties, and over the last decades considerable progress has been achieved in understanding the details of the picture [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12].…”
