The shape and collectivity of 80 Ge were investigated via a sub-barrier-energy Coulomb excitation measurement using the JANUS setup at the NSCL ReA3 facility. The 80 Ge spectroscopic quadrupole moment Qs(2 + 1 ) of the 2 + 1 state was measured for the first time, and the precision of the 80 Ge B(E2; 0 + 1 → 2 + 1 ) transition strength was increased. The experimental Qs(2 + 1 ) value indicates a large, prolate deformation for 80 Ge, which is consistent with large-scale shell-model calculations performed for comparison. These results provide important benchmarks for models that try to describe nuclear shape in neutron rich nuclei near the magic number N = 50.

“…Two values for the quadrupole moments were given, one obtained with constructive interference between the direct excitation of the first 2 + state and excitation via the second 2 + state and the other one with destructive interference. The authors of references [24][25][26] find that there is more evidence supporting constructive interference, therefore, for the current analysis the value for the diagonal matrix element is calculated as a weighted mean of the quadrupole moments from all the above mentioned studies obtained with constructive interference. The values from destructive interference were not taken into account.…”

The isotopes 122,124,126 Cd were studied in a "safe" Coulomb-excitation experiment at the radioactive ion-beam facility REX-ISOLDE at CERN. The reduced transition probabilities B(E2; 0 + g.s. → 2 + 1 ) and limits for the quadrupole moments of the first 2 + excited states in the three isotopes were determined. The onset of collectivity in the vicinity of the Z = 50 and N = 82 shell closures is discussed by comparison with shell model and beyond mean-field calculations.
