Repair of a scleral defect with an autogenous fascia lata graft in a dog

Abstract: A case of a traumatic scleral rupture with uveal herniation in a dog was treated with an autogenous fascia lata graft. Placement of the graft resolved the uveal prolapse and resulted in return of strength and a more normal structure. Fascia lata appears to be an effective scaffolding graft for the repair of scleral defects. It is cheap, easily harvested and large grafts may be obtained. Healing was rapid and the end result was a cosmetic, comfortable, fully functional eye.

“…Although this technique was used to treat a limbal melanoma after excision, this technique could be used for any large eyewall defect. Described corneoscleral grafting techniques are numerous and include autologous grafts using conjunctiva, third eyelid cartilage, fascia lata, biosynthetic grafts, homologous cornea or cornea with sclera, amniotic membrane from a variety of species and prosthetic grafts . Autologous grafts are desirable for corneal surgery because they do not elicit a donor–host rejection reaction.…”

“…Free or pedicled fascia grafts have also been successfully used in a variety of procedures other than body wall reconstruction: repair of scleral defects (Grundon et al ); creation of venous patch grafts (Csebi et al ); repair of urethral defects (Atalan et al ); replacement of patellar tendon (Gemmill & Carmichael ); intraarticular cranial cruciate reconstruction (Kowaleski et al ); caudal cruciate reconstruction (Kowaleski et al ), and Achilles tendon reconstruction (Swiderski et al ).…”

“…안구의 개방성 손상은 안구의 외벽을 구성하는 각막과 공 막에 열개가 발생되는 질환으로 주로 창상이나 종양에 의해 발생된다 (2,6,11). 공막의 대부분은 안와 안쪽에 위치하고 있 기 때문에 창상에 의한 개방성 손상은 주로 각막에 발생된다.…”
