Repair of the Orbital Wall Fractures in Rabbit Animal Model Using Nanostructured Hydroxyapatite-Based Implant

Abstract: Cellular uptake and cytotoxicity of nanostructured hydroxyapatite (nanoHAp) are dependent on its physical parameters. Therefore, an understanding of both surface chemistry and morphology of nanoHAp is needed in order to be able to anticipate its in vivo behavior. The aim of this paper is to characterize an engineered nanoHAp in terms of physico-chemical properties, biocompatibility, and its capability to reconstitute the orbital wall fractures in rabbits. NanoHAp was synthesized using a high pressure hydrother… Show more

“…Correlating allergic rhinitis cases with nasal sinus ultrasound could be a future step in the management of this pathology (13). Thus, we hope that our data will help shift the use of sonography from experimental to clinical practice in ENT and other allied specialties, such as ophthalmology, plastic surgery, and trauma surgery (14,15).…”

“…The advantages of resorbable sheeting are wide availability, good maneuverability in the wound, the possibility of intraoperative contouring, and smooth surface and edges. Their disadvantages include their cost, the fact that they are not radiopaque (postoperative implant cannot be viewed), degradation of the material can cause contour loss, sterile inflammation, serous orbit drainage is less efficient than in titanium meshes, and long-term stability and support [ 4 , 76 ].…”

“…In all polymer constructions, often without major changes to the design file of the device, the starting material composition can be modified to induce nano- and microtopography, variation in chemical composition, and even crystallography [ 83 ]. Hydroxyapatite, a calcium phosphate, was used in some studies with polymers [ 76 , 86 ]. This led to the formation of a polymer-based material with nano-sized and fully crystallized ceramic granules at its surface [ 87 , 88 ].…”

“…Regardless of the surgical technique, there is always a preoperative assessment, taking into account the history of ocular pathology (congenital or acquired ocular affection), objective and paraclinical examination, patient requirements (discomfort, aesthetic aspect), associated general disorders, explanation of pathology and surgical technique (pre- and post-operative psychological counseling), and, last but not least, written consent of the patient [ 14 , 15 ].…”
