Repeatable self-healing of thermosetting fiber reinforced polymer composites with thermoplastic healant

Abstract: This paper presents the study of repeatable self-healing capability of thermoplastic healing agent poly-caprolactone (CAPA-6506) and shape memory polymer (SMP) in a fiber reinforced polymer composite structure. This self-healing is inspired by the bio-mimetic process of ‘close then heal’ mechanism where the thermally actuated SMP causes the closing of cracks and the thermoplastic healing agent performs the healing. In this study, two types of sixteen layered unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced thermoset pol… Show more

“…From Figure 11, it is evident that the propagation fracture energy is higher than the initiation fracture energy for both types of the specimens, which complies with the literature. 40,55 From the Rcurve, it is evident that the propagation fracture toughness for the control specimens was almost similar to that of GnP reinforced specimens, which is due to the contribution of fibre bridging of control CFRPC.…”

“…Pratama et al [ 19 ] provided guidelines for determining the composition of healing agent solutions of three different multimaleimides to optimize the healing performance of epoxy–amine polymer. Jony et al [ 20 ] studied the bio‐mimetic repeatable self‐healing capability of thermoplastic healing agent poly‐caprolactone together with shape memory polymer in thermosetting fiber reinforced polymer composites. Bolimowski et al [ 21 ] investigated the behavior of self‐healing microcapsules separately containing the epoxy resin and imidazole hardener in CFRP composites.…”

“…Once thermoset is cured, their three-dimensional molecular network structure exhibits a very high level of dimensional stability. The important thermal properties of the current commercially available thermoset compound are listed in Table 5 [ 203 , 204 , 205 , 206 ].…”
