Repeated evolution of herbicide resistance in Lolium multiflorum revealed by haplotype‐resolved analysis of acetyl‐CoA carboxylase

Caio A. C. G. Brunharo,
Patrick J. Tranel

Abstract: Herbicide resistance in weeds is one of the greatest challenges in modern food production. The grass species Lolium multiflorum is an excellent model species to investigate evolution under similar selection pressure because populations have repeatedly evolved resistance to many herbicides, utilizing a multitude of mechanisms to neutralize herbicide damage. In this work, we investigated the gene that encodes acetyl‐CoA carboxylase (ACCase), the target site of the most successful herbicide group available for gr… Show more

“…Resistance to multiple herbicides in L. multiflorum has recently been documented from agricultural fields in the western US (Brunharo & Tranel, 2023, Brunharo & Streisfeld, 2022, Bobadilla et al, 2021, Brunharo & Hanson, 2018), with clear evidence of widespread gene flow among populations, as well as repeated, independent herbicide resistance evolution. However, genetic resources in L. multiflorum remain limited.…”
