Repeated ultrasound-guided intra-articular injections of 40mg of Hyalgan® may be useful in symptomatic relief of hip osteoarthritis

Abstract: Symptomatic osteoarthritis (OA) patient management includes the use of non-pharmacological therapies, analgesics, physiotherapy and eventually surgery. Whereas local injections (e.g., corticosteroids, hyaluronan) are easily performed on the knee, hip injections are considerably more difficult 1 . Recent literature proves that ultrasound (US)-guided hip injections are safe and allow easy access to the hip joint space 2,3 . Steroids may be injected in this space, but the symptomatic benefit achieved by intra-art… Show more

“…The present study demonstrates the safety and efficacy of Jointe x® for the treatment of hip OA injected under ultrasound-controlled procedure (13) . The data from this cohort study are simi lar to our previous studies (12)(13)(14)(15), giving additional evidence that viscosupplementation may be useful in treating hipOA.…”

“…For such reasons, it has been suggested to perform intra-articular injection of the hip under radiological or ultrasound control. Although several ultrasound guidance techniques were available (16)(17)(18), we developed a personal one using an anterosuperior approach (12)(13)(14)(15). We had reported several observational trials to assess viscosupplementation for the treatment of hip OA with a progressive number of patients and longer follow-up using different HA products.…”

“…From the papers retrieved in the search the following data were extracted: sample size, inclusion / exclusion criteria, treatment procedures, evaluation methods, clinical results and follow-up duration. The case series, published by Migliore et al (16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21) and Van den Bekerom et al (22,23), at different times, were considered cumulative. Methodological quality of included studies was assessed by assigning Levels of Evidence as previously defined by the Centre for Evidence Based Medicine (CEBM) (24).…”

“…The need for concomitant analgesia like NSAIDS, opiods etc and modalities like ultrasound therapy, short wave diathermy etc is reduced. There is increasing interest in the use of HAs for OA at sites other than the knee including shoulder and hip OA [34,35].…”
