Replace Psychometric Inferences with Direct Brain Measurements: LORETA Reflects Traditional Cerebral Loci for Neuropsychological Tests

Abstract: Inferences of subtle cerebral injury and dysfunction have been historically dependent upon psychometric tests from which clinical neuropsychological profiles are generated. In addition to being secondary, over-inclusive and crude indicators of cerebral activity, psychometric tests are subject to economic incentives to "re-norm" traditional methods under the pretense of "ensuring" contemporary representations that are sanctioned by regulating organizations dominated by agendas of control over the interpretation… Show more

“…mechanism of action. With respect to the brain, surrogate parameters may be very helpful and possibly are able to replace directly psychometric measurements [14]. Another surrogate parameter obtained from nuclear magnetic resonance measurements known as BOLD response has been related to electrophysiological signatures based on EEG frequencies [15].…”

“…Interestingly, higher delta and theta power have been related to estimation of mental energy versus tiredness, where increases indicated higher mental energy [27]. It has been even suggested that psychometric testing could be replaced by direct measurement of quantitative EEG using source density analysis [28]. It is known from the literature that oscillatory brain dynamics in the theta frequency range are functionally related to the retrieval of lexical semantic information [29].…”

“…However, in the presence of the higher dosage statistically significant increases of alpha1 and alpha2 power were recognized in frontal (F 3 and F 4 ) central (C 3 and C 4 ), temporal (T 4,5,6 ) and occipital brain areas (O 1,2 ). With respect to beta1 power only less prominent increases were seen.…”

“…Using questionnaires a relationship between mood and EEG spectra was reported [5]. Due to the intimate relationship between psychometric testing and EEG spectral signatures it was even suggested that cognitive testing could be replaced by quantitative EEG measurements [6]. Quantitative EEG measurements in the relaxed state and during performance of cognitive tests are therefore well suited to describe functional changes of brain activity induced by intake of food [7] [8], food supplements [9] or drugs [10].…”
