“…Dorsal scale row reduction formulae were based on Dowling 1951b . Morphometrics measurements and other scale counts were carried out following Zhao 2006 and Huang 2021 . Body and tail length measurements were taken with a ruler to the nearest 1 mm.…”

“…Although useful for species identification, the COI barcoding approach is not suitable for reconstructing higher-level phylogenetic relationships, as suggested by other similar studies (e.g., Hawlitschek et al, 2017;Vences et al, 2005). Currently, there are multiple taxonomic systems for snakes in China (Huang, 2021;Uetz, 2020;Wang, Ren, et al, 2020), with the differences among these taxonomic systems being mainly above the generic level. Our results generally do not resolve phylogenetic relationships above the generic level, and hence cannot be used to resolve higher-level taxonomic controversies on Chinese snakes.…”

“…As one of 17 megadiverse countries (Mittermeier, 1988;www.biodi versi tya-z. org), China harbours an extraordinarily high level of snake species diversity due to a large variety of climatic regions, ecosystems across a vast geographic area, and complex paleoclimatology and palaeogeography (Guo et al, 2016(Guo et al, , 2022Huang, 2021;Wang, Ren, et al, 2020;Zhao, 2006;Zhao & Adler, 1993). At present, 283 species of snakes have been reported from China, representing 8% of the world's snake diversity, and of which at least 60 species are endemic to China (31 December 2020, Chen, Wu, et al, 2021;Uetz, 2020;Wang, Ren, et al, 2020).…”
