Report on Activity of Lichen Lectins

Abstract: SHORT COMMUNICATIONS REPORT ON ACTIVITY OF LICHEN LECTINS Agglutination or clumping of red blood cells by plant extracts were reported by Stillmark (1888). Boyd & Shapleigh (1954) subsequently introduced the term lectin (from the Latin legere, to pick or choose) to describe haemagglutinins obtained from plants. Lectins in lichen extracts have been reported by Estola & Vartia (1955) and by Barrett & Howe (1968). Although these authors concluded that they were unable to demonstrate specificity in the lichen lect… Show more

“…The Quechuan variety of Santiago del Estero in Argentina was addressed by a separate research tradition in early work by Bravo (1956) and more recent publications by Alderetes Nardi (2002). Also from the 1960s on, Aymara and its sister language Jaqaru became the object of detailed descriptions (Hardman 1966(Hardman , 1983(Hardman , 2000Hardman et al 1974Hardman et al , 1988Porterie-Gutiérrez 1988). The relatively early date of most descriptive work on the major Andean languages necessarily implies that it was not yet heavily influenced by the advances in functional and typological linguistics that characterize most present-day descriptions of South American languages.…”

“…The molecular weights of the protein products were estimated by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, using 20% gel concentration (Wu et al, 1997). Aqueous extracts from several cultures having hydrocarbons were analyzed for lectins following standard methods (Hardman et al, 1983;Goldstein and Poretz, 1986). The extracts were tested against group A, B and O blood cells.…”
