Background: Despite national efforts to control pediatric anemia in Peru, each year, 67.4% of all newborns are diagnosed with anemia during their first year of life. The literature on Peruvian mothers' understanding and beliefs of pediatric anemia is limited. In the present study, we aimed to understand mother's perspective of pediatric anemia and explore their perceptions on how to prevent and treat anemia in Peru.Methods: During May–June 2018, we administered a short demographic questionnaire and conducted language-sensitive interviews with mothers of children clinically diagnosed with anemia in three different governmental health centers in Arequipa, Peru. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. We used the Framework Analysis approach to analyze qualitative data.Results: A total of 14 Peruvian mothers were interviewed. Across interviews, three main themes emerged: (I) Mothers' Understanding of Pediatric Anemia; (II) Attitudes about Provider Recommendations for Pediatric Anemia Control; and (III) Barriers to Effective Pediatric Anemia Control. Peruvian mothers expressed skepticism toward national pediatric anemia guidelines as they believe recommendations received at health clinics jeopardized their children's overall health. Participants identified several barriers to effective anemia control: limited and confusing health information received during pediatric healthcare appointments, lack of systematic protocols in health clinics, and inconsistent referral processes.Conclusion: We identified factors that limit the acceptance of current pediatric anemia control guidelines followed at governmental health centers in Arequipa, Peru. Understanding maternal beliefs concerning pediatric anemia can guide future anemia control guidelines at the primary care level for pediatric patients in Peru.

Objetivo: Explorar los conocimientos, percepciones y prácticas de familias, actores locales y personal de salud (PS) de la provincia de Condorcanqui, respecto al consumo de micronutrientes (MMN) en niños de 06 a 35 meses de edad. Materiales y métodos: Estudio cualitativo realizado entre junio y agosto del 2015, en población Awajún y Wampis de los distritos de Río Santiago, Cenepa y Nieva; incluyó 38 entrevistas en profundidad, 13 grupos focales y 28 observaciones directas. Resultados: La comunidad entendió que la anemia causaba palidez o delgadez en el niño y pueden tratarla con sus propios ‘remedios’. El PS consideraba importante comprender al usuario y observaba problemas de acceso y adecuación cultural en su labor. Reconoció que la capacitación recibida fue insuficiente, pero cumplía con sensibilizar a la comunidad. Los MMN se dieron en la primera comida del día y con alimentos locales, observándose valoraciones positivas y negativas (causa diarrea, alergias o rechazo por su sabor u olor) sobre su aceptabilidad. Existe retroalimentación de la información monitoreada en la consulta y visita domiciliaria, pero no puede asegurarse el consumo y adherencia al MMN. Conclusiones: La intervención debe incorporar elementos culturales y mensajes claros sobre el beneficio y contenido de los MMN. Se deben generar alianzas estratégicas y promover el trabajo interinstitucional con diferentes actores sociales, para facilitar la sensibilización y acceso al MMN y alimentos básicos.

Inequalities in terms of access and quality of healthcare persist, especially among Andean populations, such as the community of Chopcca. Here, we describe the perception of healthcare provided in medical facilities as well as the practices linked to health care in residents of settlements in the Huancavelica region. We carried out a cross-sectional study by means of a structured questionnaire administered to 775 residents of urban and rural towns of the Yauli and Paucará districts. 68.7% refer always using medicinal plants to cure themselves; 86.7% never made a "payment" to Mother Earth; 81.4% has not practiced coca qaway or sara qaway. 88.5% of respondents visit the medical facility when they fall ill. 57.4% refer that the healthcare staff always transmits confidence and security, this proportion is higher in rural vs. urban areas (64.6% versus 28.8%). The communities under study demand the healthcare services offered by the formal system; nevertheless, traditional cultural practices persist, being the most important one the use of medicinal plants.
