The aim of this study was to identify the interests of young people in their occupation of free time that configures the experiences they have lived and to analyse what they would like to live in terms of leisure, but that, due to some impending factor, do not do so. The research is linked to a larger study: “Leisure in Brazil” that analysed the ways of living leisure in the national territory. The article dealt specifically with youth leisure in the southeast region and the information was collected through structured interviews. Despite the existing differences due to the socioeconomic situation, gender, and education of young people, we identified the relevance attributed to leisure in the company of friends, confirming the socializing and unifying role of groups through leisure. The analysis pointed out the economic and educational inequality, reflected in the access to leisure activities and justifies the need to abandon a homogenizing view of youth.

“…For the first time, the Portuguese Law included the right to participate in care, stating that the young people in care has the right to be heard and actively participate in all matters of interest, including those relating to the case plan intervention and the residential care setting functioning. Progressively, the institutional model of residential care in the Portuguese context has been replaced by a family-oriented model of intervention (Martins, 2004;Rodrigues et al, 2013), which includes smaller settings, qualified professionals and interventions focused on the development of young people. Also, the number of young people placed in these settings has been decreasing (around 21% in the last decade; ISS, 2020) due to the efforts made on family preservation and reintegration.…”

Fulfilling young people's right to participation in residential care is critical as it is associated with better psychological outcomes. This chapter describes a qualitative study, involving Portuguese professionals working in residential care (N=87) who completed an online survey with a set of open-ended questions. Content analysis revealed six core categories -the Concept of Participation, Participation Life Domains, Residential Care Domains of Participation, Participation Enablers, Barriers to Participation, Benefits of Participation -and 18 main subcategories. Participation was mostly defined as the opportunity for children to have a voice and express their opinion, ensuring also that their views are considered and taken seriously. Professionals acknowledged the young people's participation in group home activities and dynamics, as well as issues related to young people's personal functioning as the two most reported domains of participation. Human resource factors were the most frequent enablers pointed out by the participants (e.g., skilled professionals), and the barriers were mostly related to the residential care context (e.g., human resource management constraints, lack of suitable space). The benefits of participation were mostly related to young people' outcomes (e.g., well-being, empowerment, sense of belonging). These findings call for the importance of fostering participation in residential care, which may also enhance young people´s well-being and the quality of residential care provided. A set of practice and policy implications are discussed, namely, the need for policy makers' awareness about this issue.

RESUMO:A pesquisa teve como objetivo conhecer as Representações Sociais (RS) de lazer e de tempo livre compartilhadas por jovens do sexo feminino, estudantes da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, com idades entre 17 e 26 anos. A investigação foi realizada a partir de duas questões de livre associação de palavras, respondidas por 111 alunas, e dois grupos focais, realizados com outras sete participantes. As análises dos dados tiveram como embasamento a Teoria das Representações Sociais, conforme proposta por Serge Moscovici, e a Teoria do Núcleo Central, descrita por Jean-Claude Abric. Como resultados, constatou-se que as RS de lazer para as jovens investigadas estão principalmente associadas às sensações resultantes de sua prática e que o tempo livre é essencialmente compreendido como um momento de descanso compensatório. Observou-se também que as representações referentes aos dois fenômenos encontram-se igualmente embasadas nos valores da sociedade ocidental contemporânea, os quais reconhecem a valorização do trabalho e do estudo em detrimento das vivências de lazer no tempo livre.Palavras-chave: lazer; tempo livre; representações sociais; jovens; juventude. ABSTRACT:The research's objective was understand the social representations of leisure and free time shared by young females students of Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo with varying age from 17 to 26. The investigation was conducted based on two free association questions, answered by 111 students, and two focus group, with other seven participants. The data analysis was based on the Theory of Social Representations, proposed by Serge Moscovici, and the Central Core Theory, described by Jean-Claude Abric. As a result we concluded that the leisure social representations is mainly associated to feelings resulting by its practice and that free time is essentially comprehended as compensatory relaxation moment. It was also observed that representations referent to the two phenomenon are equally based on the western contemporary occidental values, which tends to valorize work and study more than leisure on free time.
