Representation of Others' Beliefs

Abstract

This chapter delves into the diverse aspects in which individuals make inferences about the beliefs and values held by others. By reviewing the psychological factors underlying representing the beliefs of others, as well as the individual differences for both the individuals being represented and those undertaking the representation, this chapter sheds light on the intricate nature of representation of other’s belief. Furthermore, it discusses the ways and considerations involved in updating these beliefs (such as observation, active interaction, and Bayesian inference) and offers suggestions for future research.
