The various constructions of Islam had varying utility for mosque opponents in Sydney, Australia, during the 1980s and 1990s. “…Scholars like Dunn (2001) and Loftus (2012) have argued that everyday, local spaces are key sites for the symbolic contestation of unequal power relations. Their work aims to show how particular 'strategies and tactics' of everyday life are useful for considering the 'elements of creative resistance' to dominant power relations in society, employed by people such as city residents, urban activists, and even researchers (see de Certeau 1984).…”

Analyses of these negotiation processes can generate insights into the relation between state and religion and the position of Muslims in different countries, from which we can draw inferences about relative religious freedom and the bargaining power of collective actors.…”

“…Although many issues were generated by the arrival of a large number of people of different ethnic and social background, policy makers for years showed no interest in solving diverse settlement issues, like housing, unemployment, recognition of classifications and skills, and diverse other social and welfare problems (Cutts 1992;CIE 1992, xv;Jupp 1991,106;Cox 1987, 90). Despite the policy changes since the 1970s and three decades of application of multicultural policies at diverse levels of society, many non-English speaking migrants still do not feel welcome (SMH 12, 2005;Dunn 2001;Betts 1999, 316;Hage 1998, 16;).…”
