Reproducibility of cardiac output measurement by cross sectional and Doppler echocardiography.

Abstract: TyneSUMMARY The variability ofDoppler echocardiographic estimation of cardiac output at the aortic orifice was investigated in eight healthy subjects. Cross sectional echocardiograms of the aortic orifice and aortic Doppler velocities were recorded and measured by four echocardiographers. Between subject variability was significantly larger than within subject variability for all variables. Variability owing to different echocardiographers and different measurement times was small compared with total variabili… Show more

“…Indeed, in a recent study comparing high doses (up to 3200 jg) of fenoterol and salbutamol given by spacer in acute severe asthma, no significant arrhythmias were observed with either drug despite significantly greater hypokalaemia and Q-T prolongation with fenoterol. 25 There are several factors which may modify the magnitude of the systemic response to 12 agonists. It is known that regular exposure to 02 agonist results in an attenuated response as a result of receptor downregulation.262' In our study most patients were documented as receiving on-demand P2 agonists, suggesting that subsensitivity had probably not occurred to any great degree.…”

“…Doppler measurements of cardiac output were higher than impedance measurements on average by 0.7 li ters-min'1 (SEM 0.4) at baseline, by 0.5 liters-min (SEM 0.5) at 1 pg/kg/min and by 0.6 liters-min-1 (SEM -l general [23,24] and for the ACVF Doppler in particular [12], ACVF Doppler and impedance cardiography pro duced similar within-subject variability which consti tuted only a small proportion (<10%) of the overall variability recorded. The total variability consists of a component owing to differences within subjects, a com ponent owing to differences between subjects and a residual component.…”

“…It is safe, does not cause any discomfort, is reproducible and accurate (9), and has been validated against Fick, dye dilution, thermodilution methods and electromagnetic flow probes (11,14). The aim of this study was to determine the sequence and extent of maternal cardiovascular adaptation to pregnancy in an integrated way in spontaneous and assisted conception pregnancies using Doppler echocardiography.…”
