Vitality strategies for 11 coenopopulations of arctic bramble (Rubus arcticus L.) were defined in conditions of medium and southern taiga on the edge of the species range. In studied conditions optimal habitats for R. arcticus growth, while maintaining high vitality index, are open meadows and coniferous-small-leaved forests with high level of soil moisture: Epilobium-gramineous wet meadow formed on a runway and surrounded by spruce-birch forest with pine and aspen-birch herbaceous forest with spruce. The study showed that the pedicel length, width of the central lobe of the 3rd leaf from the metamere base, and number of living leaves are the most sensitive features which react to the state of environment. R. arcticus shows 3 ontogenetic tactics near the border of its range: divergent, convergent and stabilizing tactic. Most of morphological features studied prove divergent character of ontogenetic tactic, which determines the increase in features’ variability in close-to-stress conditions. Near its southern border arctic bramble uses defensive strategies for survival allowing its successful vegetative reproduction. According to the results of the study and species’ ecological peculiarities and in order to achieve effective monitoring and prognosis of the species’ state, it is important that we apply complex estimation of variability of physiological-biological and morphological parameters of R. arcticus.

Cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus L.) and arctic raspberry (Rubus arcticus L.) are highly nutritional and medicinal but lowyield berries, with some populations being on the verge of extinction. Micropropagation biotechnologies are cost-effective and may provide healthy and plentiful planting material for these valuable berries. Clonal micropropagation of cloudberry and arctic raspberry requires new methods adapted for Russian varieties. This research featured the effect of sterilizing agents on the survival rate of explants of R. chamaemorus and R. arcticus, as well as the effect of growth regulators in the nutrient medium on their organogenesis in vitro. Berries obtained from regenerant plants of R. chamaemorus (Arkhangelsk and Vologda varieties) and R. arcticus (Sofia and Galina varieties) underwent a biochemical analysis. Further research involved the effect of sterilizing agents and exposure time on the viability of explants, as well as the effect of the nutrient medium composition and the concentration of growth regulators on the development of microshoots and roots in vitro. In case of lateral buds, the highest survival rate of both types of explants (80–96%) belonged to the samples sterilized with 0.2% silver nitrate and 5% Lysoformin 3000 for 15 min. In case of etiolated shoots (79–100%), it was the samples treated with 0.2% silver nitrate, 0.01% Nika 2, and 5% Lysoformin 3000 for 10 min. The maximal total length of microshoots in R. chamaemorus (19.4–22.7 cm) was registered at 0.1 mg/L Cytodef in the Murashige and Skoog medium. The maximal total length of roots (46.0–56.6 cm) was obtained when the medium contained 0.5 mL/L indolylacetic acid. As for R. arcticus, the maximal total lengths of microshoots (22.4–22.8 cm) and roots (86.6–89.3 cm) occurred at the same concentrations of growth regulators on 1/2 Murashige and Skoog medium. In this research, Cytodef and indolylacetic acid applied in the process of clonal micropropagation of R. chamaemorus and R. arcticus made it possible to increase the yield of high-quality planting material for commercial plantations.

Seasonal development and yield dynamics of the fruits of the arctic bramble (Rubus arcticus L.) were studied in the west of the Magadan Region in the upper reaches of the river Kolyma. The purpose of research is to assess the dynamics of the dates of the onset of the phenological phases of the arctic bramble for the period 2002–2021 and identification of climatic factors affecting fruit yield fluctuations (1992–2021). The tasks of the work included summarizing the data of phenological observations on the populations of the arctic bramble and analyzing the dependence of the dynamics of fruit yield on meteorological indicators and changes in habitat conditions. Phenological observations have been carried out from 2002 to the present; the yield was estimated visually according to the Kapper-Formozov scale (1992–2021). Meteorological observations at the field station of the Institute of Biological Problems of the North FEB RAS have been carried out since 1992. The annual cycle of the arctic bramble (11 phenophases) and the features of the passage of individual stages are described. The seasonal cycle of development of the arctic bramble consists of 5 generative and 5 vegetative phases, the dynamics of the onset dates of which does not show a significant positive trend. For the period 1992–2021 there was a decrease in yield associated with an increase in the frequency of frosts during the flowering period, dry weather in July and changes in habitat conditions. Wild-growing populations of the arctic bramble are a valuable genetic material for breeding work and can be introduced into culture on the territory of the Magadan Region.
