Reproduction in captive female Cape porcupines (Hystrix africaeaustralis)

Abstract: Summary. Captive females attained sexual maturity at an age of 9\p=n-\16months and conceived for the first time when 10\p=n-\25months old. Adult females were polyoestrous but did not cycle while lactating or when isolated from males. The length of the cycle varied from 17 to 42 days (mean \ m=+-\ s.d. 31\m=.\2\ m=+-\6\m=.\5 days; n = 43) and females experienced 3\p=n-\7 sterile cycles before conceiving. Pregnancy lasted for 93\p=n-\94days (93\m=.\5\ m=+-\0\m=.\6days; N = 4) and litter intervals varied from 296… Show more

“…This estimate differs substantially from the 210-day «breeding season» reported by Sweitzer and Holcombe (1993), but is more comparable to gestation in Hystrix hodgsoni (105 days) and Hystrix africaeaustralis (94 days) (van Aarde 1985). There are several possible explanations for why our results differ from Brought to you by | University of California Authenticated Download Date | 6/9/15 9:59 AM Sweitzer and Holcombe (1993).…”

“…dorstaum breeds in the late summer and autumn and typically delivers one offspring in the spring. Reproductive seasonality may be a result of food availability as has been suggested in the Cape porcupine (Hystrhc africaeaustralis) (van Aarde 1985). Porcupines breed readily in captivity, however little is known about their reproductive biology.…”

“…This phase was longest in the agouti, consisting of approximately 19 days, accounting for 61% of the cycle. These observations are similar to that of the guinea pig and porcupine, and are also observed in some new world hystricomorph species like the plains viscacha (Lagostomus maximum) and cuis (G. musteloides) (Weir, 1971;van Aarde, 1985).…”

“…Duration of pregnancy is not clearly established for any Hystrix species, under natural conditions. In the large body of literature (Jennison 1927, in Weir 1974Dekeyser 1955, in Weir 1974Gosling 1980;Scaramella 1980;Tohwe and Tohm 1981 ;van Aarde 1985 ;Santini 1980) gestation is reported to last from a minimum of 90 to a maximum of 120 days. If births are in February, in the study population, mating should take place in October or September, months of very large home ranges.…”
