Reproduction of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) B biotype in maize fields (Zea mays L.) in Brazil

Abstract: This is the first report of the B biotype completing its development on maize plants. This surprising anomaly indicates that the B biotype is capable of adapting to monocotyledonous host plants, and importantly, broadens the host range to include at least one species in the Poaceae. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…Under conducive weather conditions, I. javanica can cause outstanding epizootics in whitefly populations (Cabanillas & Jones, 2009;Lacey et al, 2008;Quintela et al, 2016 TA B L E 3 Interactions between Isaria javanica CG1282 (5 × 10 6 conidia/ml) and buprofezin based on observed mortality to Bemisia tabaci second nymphal instars under screenhouse conditions host stage and the incubation time (Jaronski, 2010;Roberts & St. Leger, 2004). Low relative humidity might explain the low nymphal mortality observed in our study as conidia require high moisture for germination (Samish et al, 2014).…”

“…Under conducive weather conditions, I. javanica can cause outstanding epizootics in whitefly populations (Cabanillas & Jones, ; Lacey et al., ; Quintela et al., ). Here, all isolates of I. javanica induced B. tabaci mortality, but results were variable among isolates tested.…”

“…Also maize fields have been reported to be damaged by the colonization of biotype B whiteflies (Quintela et al, 2016). B. tabaci not only causes disintegration of chloroplasts, sooty mold by honeydew, and lower carotenoid in many plants, especially the ones belonging to Solanaceae (Masuda et al, 2016), but carries and transmits several species of Geminiviruses which can lower crop yields tremendously (Shi et al, 2014a).…”
