The study object was an Odontesthes bonariensis (Valenciennes, 1835) population of a characteristically shallow lake from the pampasic region. Over one year, zooplankton and fish samples were collected monthly. As a function of time and gender, several indices were investigated (relative weight, mesentery fat index, gonadosomatic index, hepatosomatic index and somatic index) and were related to zooplanktonic community dynamics, the main energy food source for this species. The results indicate that the seasonal information contained in the weight compartments is most important in mesentery fat, gonads and liver. The zooplankton availability modulates reserves (fat) behaviour and physiologic activity (liver), determining spawn intensity. Thus, in spring spawns, with higher zooplankton availability, mature individuals of the population, males and females, transfer energy from the food to the gonads. In autumn spawns, they use the fat reserves for gonad ripening.Keywords: Odontesthes bonariensis, condition, zooplanktonic community, energy allocation.Mudanças sazonais nos índices somáticos do Odontesthes bonariensis (Teleostei, Atheriniformes) em uma lagoa da região Neotropical (Argentina) Resumo O objeto do estudo foi a população Odontesthes bonariensis (Valenciennes, 1835) de uma lagoa característica da região dos pampas argentinos. Durante um ano, recolheram-se mostras mensais da comunidade zooplanctônica e da população de peixe-rei. Pesquisaram-se vários índices (peso relativo e os índices de gordura mesentérica, gônado-somático, hepato-somático e somático) em função do tempo e do sexo, relacionando-os com a dinâmica de comunidade de zooplâncton, a principal fonte de energia para esta espécie. Os resultados indicam que a informação sazonal contida nos compartimentos de peso é muito importante na gordura mesentérica, nas gônadas e no fígado. A disponibilidade do zooplâncton modula as reservas (gordura), o comportamento e a atividade fisiológica (fígado), determinando a intensidade da desova. Assim, na desova de primavera, com disponibilidade mais elevada do zooplâncton, a maioria dos indivíduos maduros da população, machos e fêmeas, transferem energia do alimento às gônadas. No outono os peixes usariam principalmente as reservas de gordura para a maduração gonadal.Palavras-chave: Odontesthes bonariensis, condição, comunidade zooplanctônica, alocação de energia.

Abstract:The relationship between recruitment and spawner biomass assumes that estimates of spawner biomass are proportional to total egg production by the stock. The validity of this assumption is in question for long-lived gadoid stocks; however, estimating total egg production independently of spawner biomass is seldom feasible. An alternative approach is to examine correlations between recruitment and variables likely to be proxies for total egg production by the stock. This indirect approach was used for haddock on the Scotian Shelf. Indices of growth (mean length at age-4) and condition (weight at 50 cm) were used as proxies for the reproductive potential of individual spawners. Both variables were positively correlated with recruitment over a 3-decade period . During the same time period, there was no relationship between recruitment and spawner biomass estimated by Virtual Population Analysis (VPA). This is further evidence that VPA-based spawner biomass is a poor index of the true reproductive potential of the stock. The results highlight the need to develop more accurate/precise measures of total egg production for use in recruitment research.Résumé : La relation entre le recrutement et la biomasse des géniteurs s'appuie sur la prémisse selon laquelle les estimations de la biomasse des géniteurs sont proportionnelles à la production totale d'oeufs par le stock. La validité de cette hypothèse est remise en question pour les stocks de gadoïdes à longue durée de vie. Toutefois, il est rarement possible d'estimer la production totale d'oeufs sans tenir compte de la biomasse des géniteurs. Une autre façon de procéder consiste à examiner les corrélations entre le recrutement et les variables considérées comme des approximations de la production totale d'oeufs par le stock. Cette approche indirecte a été appliquée au stock d'aiglefin de la plate-forme néo-écossaise. Des indices de la croissance (longueur moyenne à l'âge de 4 ans) et de la condition (poids à 50 cm) ont été utilisés comme approximations du potentiel reproducteur des géniteurs. Une corrélation positive entre ces variables et le recrutement a été observée sur une période de plus de 30 ans . Durant cette même période, aucune corrélation n'a été observée entre le recrutement et la biomasse des géniteurs estimée par analyse des populations virtuelles. Ces résultats démontrent une fois de plus que l'estimation de la biomasse des géniteurs par analyse des populations virtuelles ne reflète pas fidèlement le potentiel reproducteur d'un stock. RESUMO -Os lipídeos exercem diversas funções biológicas, como constituintes de membranas, precursores de hormônios, e por seu alto conteúdo calórico, um eficiente composto para estoque de energia. Nos peixes, ao contrário dos mamíferos, os modelos de deposição lipídica são mais diversos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a concentração de lipídeo total no plasma e nos tecidos somático e reprodutivo do matrinxã, Brycon cephalus, macho e fêmea, destacando alguns índices somáticos relacionados à dinâmica desse substrato. De outubro/97 a janeiro/99, foram amostrados, mensalmente, 8 a 12 peixes, totalizando 174 animais. Após anestesia, retirou-se sangue heparinizado para dosagem do triacilglicerol plasmático. Cada peixe foi mensurado e fígado, gônadas e gordura visceral retirados e pesados para cálculo do IHS (índice hepatossomático) IGS (índice gonadossomático) e IGVS (índice gorduro-viscerossomático). Os maiores teores do lipídeo total ocorreram no músculo vermelho, com aproximadamente 18%, seguido pelo fígado e gônadas com valores médios de 16,5%. O músculo branco apresentou o menor teor com 2,3%. A análise de variância dos IHS e IGVS mostrou que ambos apresentaram efeito significativo para bimestre, com índices mais baixos em períodos de temperaturas mais altas, e não significativo para sexo e a interação sexo e bimestre. O matrinxã estoca lipídeos em vários tecidos corpóreos incluindo gordura mesentérica, fígado, músculos e gônadas.Palavras-chave: peixe de água doce, metabolismo, gordura corporal. The aim of this study was to determine lipid distribution in somatic and reproductive tissues of matrinxã, Brycon cephalus, both male and female, highlighting somatic indices related to lipid dynamics. From Oct 98 to Jan 99, a total of 174 fish (8-12 each month) were sampled. After fish anesthesia, heparinized blood was collected for plasma triacylglycerol determination. Fish were individually weighed and measured, and liver, gonads and visceral fat were collected and weighed for HSI (hepatosomatic index), GSI (gonad somatic index) and MFI (mesenteric fat index) calculation. The highest values of total lipids were found in red muscle (about 18%), liver and gonads (about 16.5%). The white muscle had a lower concentration (2.5%).
