Four species of nereidid polychaetes, Peri ner eis cultrifera, P. macropus, Nereis falsa, and Platy ner eis dumerilii, were identified during three years in four intertidal rocky shore sites (El-Kala, Annaba, Skikda and Collo) along the east coast of Algeria during the years 2011-2013. Species' distribution fluctuated according to sites and season. Perinereis cultrifera was observed during most of the year, except in summer. Perinereis macropus was observed at El-Kala, Skikda and Collo mainly in late winter and early spring. Nereis falsa was observed during most of the year in El-Kala and Annaba; this species was also observed in Skikda in 2011 but then disappeared in the last two years of this study. Finally, the presence of P. dumerilii was noticed only in El-Kala for a few months (mainly in March and April). Perinereis cultrifera, P. macropus and P. dumerilii reproduce after acquiring the epitokous form between April and May, when surface seawater temperature starts rising. The largest mature oocytes were about the same for P. cultrifera (279 µm) and P. macropus (278 µm), while this value was smaller for P. dumerilii (166 µm). In contrast to the other three species of nereidid polychaetes, N. falsa reproduces without epitokal modification between July and August when sea temperature was highest. The largest mature oocytes (168 µm) are about the same as P. dumerilii but is much small than those of P. cultrifera and P. macropus.

The data analyzed to inventory of all polychaetes in Algerian waters make it possible to estimate the diversity of this group to 534 species. The most diversified families are Syllidae (66 species), Spionidae (37 species) and Terebellidae (27 species).The presence of these listed species along the Algerian coast is compared with their occurrence in nine other areas of the Mediterranean Sea, in the Black Sea and in four other areas of the World Ocean. Comparison are also made with respect to the indications of the biogeographical origin for each species. The polychaete fauna of the Algerian coast is among the richest of the Mediterranean Sea and comparable to that reported for the French Mediterranean continental shelf and the Aegean Sea, but higher that that found in the bordering coastlines of Morocco and Tunisia. Most of the species have an Atlantic origin and are present in the western Mediterranean Sea; this inventory includes eight Non-Indigenous Polychaete Species in the Algerian waters.

Reproductive and population-level responses are ecologically relevant diagnostic tools for revealing the cost of long-term tolerance to contaminants. Spatial density distribution, seasonal density, biomass, size frequency histograms and oocytes stages in Perinereis gualpensis (Polychaeta: Nereididae) from a highly anthropogenically impacted estuary (Lenga, south-central Chile) were compared with low-polluted estuaries (Tubul and Raqui). Spatial distribution showed that the highest P. gualpensis abundances occur in the central (middle) estuarine area, establishing them as suitable zones for comparisons of estuaries. Middle areas also showed differences among estuaries in terms of population and reproductive responses. Mature stage oocytes and juvenile recruitment limited to certain seasons and low adult survival led to significant low densities and biomasses in Lenga individuals (p < .05). Conversely, high densities and biomass, continuous recruitment and mature oocyte occurrence were observed in Tubul-Raqui estuaries. These results reflected population and reproductive differences among high-and low-polluted estuaries, suggesting that chronic pollution status in Lenga estuary is a factor to be considered when evaluating these responses.
