Reproductive biology and growth of the goatfish, Parupeneus barberinus (Lacepede), in Aqaba, Jordan

Abstract: Monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index indicate that the main spawning season of Parupeneus barberrnus in Aqaba extends from May to August for females and from May to June for males. Males in the 4 years age-group (63.4%) and the 5 years age-group (65.1%) are predominant. The von Bertalanffy growth equation parameters calculated from mean total length data are: L, =32.8 cm; K=0.225; to= -0.73 for males and L,=32,7cm; K=0.206; to= -0.82 for females. The length-weight regression coefficients for males (245) … Show more

“…In contrast, during winter (November to March) currents are southward directed and show a deflection to the African coast (Morcos 1970). There are no published studies about the spawning season of L. quadrilineatu s, but several studies indicate that the spawning season of fishes in the Red Sea is during the summer months (Wahbeh & Ajiad 1985; Froukh 2001; Zekeria 2003). This finding shows that oceanographic conditions and timing of spawning are important factors for determining the direction of dispersal in a marine organism.…”

“…Thus, distribution problems do arise and weaken some of the methods of comparison which have been used with such indices, i.e. mean and confidence limits (e.g., Siddiqui, 1977;Wilson & Pitcher, 1983) and analysis of variance (e.g., Benfrey & Sutterlin, 1984;Wahbeh & Ajiad, 1985). Box-Cox transformations, which are specifically designed to normalize data and to make variances more homogeneous, suggest that the reciprocal of the condition factors might be more appropriate.…”

“…The estimated oldest age of M. vanicolensis was the same at 7.75 years for both sexes (Figure 6). Wahbeh and Ajiad, 1985), and there are no reports of long-lived species such as Lutjanidae (Taylor et al, 2018),…”
