“…In Lake Sava, the mean age and size of female black bullhead at sexual maturity ranged from 1.71 years and 13.8 cm TL in 2011 to 2.14 years and 15.5 cm in 2012 (all specimens >15 cm TL considered sexually mature). These results are consistent with those from other European sites, where females matured at 9.0-15.5 cm TL Novomeská & Kováč, 2009;Ruiz-Navarro, Britton, Jackson, Davies & Sheath, 2015). Males from another site in Serbia (Vojvodina), appeared to mature earlier than those in Lake Sava, with individuals of between 4.3 and 9.7 cm F I G U R E 4 Age frequency of black bullhead sampled from Lake Sava in different years TL already having formed sperm ampullae and had seminal ducts full of multiplied spermatogonia (Sotirov, 1968).…”

“…Such systems were where initial studies of European populations were undertaken, focussing on diet and habitat (Boët 1980;Thiero Yatabary 1981), with some data provided on growth (Boët 1981) and body condition (Thiero Yatabary 1981). More recently, investigations of the species in Europe focused on distribution (Copp 1989) and habitat use (Copp 1993;Carpentier et al 2004;Cucherousset et al 2006), growth (Pedicillo et al 2009), diet (Leunda et al 2008;Ruiz-Navarro et al 2015) and body morphology (Novomeská et al 2010(Novomeská et al , 2013Cvijanović et al 2012;Movchan et al 2014), with some attention to life-history traits (Novomeská and Kováč 2009) and management options (Cucherousset et al 2008).…”

“…Whereas in the UK, only one of a few reported populations (Wheeler and Maitland 1973;Wheeler 1978;Wheeler et al 2004) has been confirmed, though the species has nonetheless been the subject of regulation since the 1980s (Copp et al 2005a). Data on that lone population in England is limited to morphology (Novomeská et al 2013) and an initial study of gonad development and dietary breadth (Ruiz-Navarro et al 2015).…”

“…Moreover, research conducted by Leunda et al Ruiz-Navarro et al (2015) in the UK showed that A. melas ate similar food. In addition, the digestive tracts of brown bullheads have been shown to be adapted for efficient digestion of flora tissues (i.e.…”

“…There is a lack of information about the diet of the brown bullhead in invaded areas in Europe, although there are reports about the food of a congeneric, A. melas, in the Iberian Peninsula (Leunda et al, 2008) and the UK (Ruiz-Navarro, Britton, Jackson, Davies, & Sheath, 2015). As this species is a regular component of the fish fauna of some regions of central-eastern Europe (Kornijów, Rechulicz, & Halkiewicz, 2003;Rechulicz et al, 2015) it is interesting whether it has a variable diet or a clear preference for certain types of food.…”
