Reproductive Phytochemistry of Bombacaceae

Abstract: Floral anthocyanins among Bombacaceae exhi6it minimal variation and consist of three commonly occurring cyanidin glycosides. Cyanidin 3-rutinoside occurs uniquely in the genus Pachira among taxa surveyed. Nectars are characterized by copious volumes and being somewhat dilute and hexose rich with respect to sugars. No evidence is detectable among Bombacaceae for a nonfiying-mammal floral chemistry syndrome which is distinguishable from a bat-visitation syndrome.

“…1 Despite the economic significance of Ceiba and Ochroma species as sources of kapok and balsa wood, respectively, little is known about the chemistry of plants from this family. 2,3 As part of our program of study of the Brazilian flora, we have carried out the first investigation of the chemical constituents of the bark from Bombacopsis glabra (Pasq.) A. Robyns.…”

“…6 ). Including the taxa from our investigation, UV-fluorescent nectar has been documented for 41 species (19 families), predominantly belonging to the eudicots 18 , 21 , 22 , 30 , 37 (Table 2 ). For most of these families, the occurrence of UV-fluorescent nectar varies within family, genus, or even species (Table 2 ; Supplementary Table S3 ).…”

“…A elucidação estrutural foi efetuada por análise de dados espectroscópicos nas regiões do ultravioleta, do infravermelho, de ressonância magnética nuclear de hidrogênio e de carbono-13 incluindo técnicas uni-e bidimensional e por espectrometria de massas. Os constituintes voláteis e alguns pigmentos florais foram identificados, respectivamente, por cromatografia em fase gasosa acoplada à espectrometria de massas 7,8 e por cromatografia em papel 6 .…”
