Reproductive success of Cardiopetalum calophyllum (Annonaceae) treelets in fragments of Brazilian savanna

Abstract: Habitat fragmentation may affect essential ecosystem processes, such as pollination, causing negative effects on plants and pollinators (Aizen & Feinsinger 1994, Jennersten 1988, Lennartsson 2002, Liow et al. 2001, Murcia 1996). Effects of fragmentation on plant–pollinator interaction were evaluated in several studies (Aguirre & Dirzo 2008, Dauber et al. 2010, Dick 2001, Donaldson et al. 2002, Dunley et al. 2009, Fuchs et al. 2003, Ghazoul & McLeish 2001, Lopes & Buzato 2007). The Brazilian sav… Show more

“…However, there are exceptions to such associations because Cardiopetalum calophyllum Schltdl., for instance, has diuturnal anthesis, a light green calyx, and a creamy corolla (Figure 2b). Elias et al (2012) [81] stated that this Annonaceae is pollinated by the nitidulid Lobiopa insularis Castelnau, a species of economic relevance as a pest in fruticulture that is widely distributed in the New World [82].…”

“…Pollinators as pollen vectors allow reproduction in angiosperms (Ashman et al, 2004;Knight et al, 2005). Ensuring effective reproduction requires biological attributes that allow them to reproduce effectively, which could determine differential ecological responses to the effects of habitat fragmentation (Da Silva Elias et al, 2012;Dainese et al, 2019). Certain adaptations of the reproductive biology of plants could be associated with the degree of dependence and/or specialization of their pollinators (Faegri & Pijl, 1979;Johnson & Steiner, 2000;Willmer, 2011).…”
