Requirements for more effective prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders

Abstract: BackgroundExposures to occupational hazards substantially increase workers’ risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and can exacerbate pre-existing disorders. The effects on MSD risk of the physical requirements of work performance are well recognised, but there is now ample evidence that work-related psychosocial hazards can also have substantial effects; further, some hazards may be additive or interactive. This evidence is not reflected in current workplace risk management practices.DiscussionBa… Show more

“…Work‐related musculoskeletal risk management strategies often focus on the reduction of physical hazards, with psychosocial hazards addressed to a lesser extent, if at all . Psychosocial hazards, such as high workload, perceptions of low managerial support, or poor safety climate have long been recognized as contributing to MSD development, and risk management strategies should incorporate management of psychosocial hazards .…”

“…Musculoskeletal disorders have a complex and variable etiology, and a range of workplace factors are associated with their development. Physical work requiring awkward postures, repetitive movements, forceful exertions, or exposure to vibration has long been recognized as contributing to the development of MSDs .…”

“…Exposures to occupational hazards substantially increase workers' risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and can exacerbate preexisting disorders. [1] Possible pathophysiological mechanisms of tissue injury include inflammation followed by repair and/or fibrotic scarring, peripheral nerve injury, and central nervous system reorganization. Computers have become essential in the modern world where a working minimum of 8 h continuously has become a norm in many professions.…”
