One of the key features of next-generation mobile networks is the ability to satisfy the requirements coming from different verticals. For satisfying these requirements, 5G networks will need to dynamically reconfigure the deployment of the network functions. However, the current deployments of mobile networks are experiencing difficulties in exhibiting the required flexibility. At the same time, the research on connectivity provisioning in use cases such as after-disaster scenarios or battlefields has converged towards the idea of Network-In-a-Box. This idea revolves around fitting all software and hardware modules needed by a mobile network in a single or a handful of physical devices. A Network-In-a-Box inherently offers a high level of flexibility that makes it capable of providing connectivity services in a wide range of scenarios. Therefore, the Network-In-a-Box concept represents an alternative approach for satisfying the requirements of next-generation mobile networks. In this survey, we analyze the state-of-the-art of Network-In-a-Box solutions proposed by academia and industry in the time frame starting from 1998 up to early 2017. First, we present the main use cases around which the concept has been conceived. Then, we abstract the common features of the Network-In-a-Box implementations, and discuss how different proposals offer these features. We then draw our conclusions and discuss possible future research directions, including steps required to reach an even higher level of flexibility. The aim of our analysis is twofold. On one hand, we provide a comprehensive view of the idea of Network-In-a-Box. On the other hand, through the analysis we present the features that future mobile networks should exhibit to achieve their design goals. In particular, we show how the Network-In-a-Box fosters the transition towards the next-generation mobile networks.

In post disaster scenarios such as war zones floods and earthquakes, the cellular communication infrastructure can be lost or severely damaged. In such emergency situations, remaining in contact with other rescue response teams in order to provide inputs for both headquarters and disaster survivors becomes very necessary. Therefore, in this research work, a design, implementation and evaluation of energy aware rapidly deployable system named EA-RDSP is proposed. The proposed research work assists the early rescue workers and victims to transmit their location information towards the remotely located servers. In EA-RDSP, two algorithms are proposed i.e., Hop count Assignment (HCA) algorithm and Maximum Neighbor Selection (MNS) algorithm. The EA-RDSP contains three types of nodes; the client node sends information about casualty in the disaster area to the server, the relay nodes transmit this information from client node to server nodes via multi-hop transmission, the server node receives messages sent by client node to alert rescue teams. In post-disaster scenarios, such as after floods, earthquakes, and in war zones, the cellular communication infrastructure may be destroyed or seriously disrupted. In such emergency scenarios, it becomes very important for first aid responders to communicate with other rescue teams in order to provide feedback to both the central office and the disaster survivors. To address this issue, rapidly deployable systems are required to re-establish connectivity and assist users and first responders in the region of incident. In this work, we describe the design, implementation, and evaluation of a rapidly deployable system for first response applications in post-disaster situations, named RDSP. The proposed system helps early rescue responders and victims by sharing their location information to remotely located servers by utilizing a novel routing scheme. This novel routing scheme consists of the Dynamic ID Assignment (DIA) algorithm and the Minimum Maximum Neighbor (MMN) algorithm. The DIA algorithm is used by relay devices to dynamically select their IDs on the basis of all the available IDs of networks. Whereas, the MMN algorithm is used by the client and relay devices to dynamically select their next neighbor relays for the transmission of messages. The RDSP contains three devices; the client device sends the victim's location information to the server, the relay device relays information between client and server device, the server device receives messages from the client device to alert the rescue team. We deployed and evaluated our system in the outdoor environment of the university campus. The experimental results show that the RDSP system reduces the message delivery delay and improves the message delivery ratio with lower communication overhead.
