Research about impact of DGs in distribution networks

Abstract: This paper discusses the impact of distributed generation (DG) to Distribution System, including the stability and protection of distribution system and reclosing. Directed towards different connecting place of DG, we analysis the disadvantages of DG to circuit-line protection of distribution system, and put toward to some methods to improve the protection for the whole line. Through some theory analysis, we had a conclusion that: these improving ways coordinated with some simple devices, can device the disadv… Show more

“…The traditional utility networks, being radial and passive are highly exposed to external disturbances but maintain their safety and security using conventional protection devices, as shown in Figure 1. Such protection devices lose their selectivity, to operate at the time of event for systems having intermittent power sources e.g., Distributed Generations (DGs) due to the bi-directional power flows [3,4]. In order to upgrade the existing protection schemes, two strategies are available, (1) changing internal settings of relays online and (2) adding directional element.…”

“…Moreover, the DG does not contribute to the greenhouse gases providing clean and efficient energy. The negative effects of DG application are: fault current level increase, discoordination of protection schemes, islanding, bidirectional power flows, and transient instabilities [3].…”
