Research and Application of Micronized Barite Drilling Fluid in HPHT Wells of the Western South China Sea

Abstract: When drilling wells in high temperature and high pressure (HTHP) fields, the drilling fluid properties are of utmost importance. If the viscosity of high density drilling fluid is too low, it will lead to barite sag and poor cuttings carrying capacity. However, lost circulation will occur due to high surge pressure and Equivalent Circulating Density (ECD) caused by high viscosity. High density drilling fluid performance is largely dependent on the use of the weighting material. The contradiction between rheolo… Show more

“…The drilling program required thermally and rheologically stable drilling fluids. Thus, there are three drilling fluid types which are used in the oil and gas wells reservoir drilling: (1) cesium/potassium formate clear brine system [140,141], (2) invert emulsion HPHT OBDF [142], and (3) invert emulsion HPHT OBDF with micronized barite slurries (MBS) [143].…”

“…Jin Chengping constructed ultra-high density (2.48g/cm 3 ) saturated salt water drilling fluid. This drilling fluid had excellent performance in lubricity, inhibitory, high temperature stability, and anti-pollution capacity [14]. Therefore, it has important theoretical and technical value to establish "three high" water-based drilling fluid rheological property control method and provide technical support for deep oil and gas drilling fluid under complex conditions.…”
